  • In the past three decades, South Central Kentucky has seen a large growth of walking, running, and bicycling activity. To meet the growing demand, more pedestrian and cycling infrastructure is needed to enhance safety, accessibility and connectivity near and around Mammoth Cave.
  • In 2017, the Cave Country Trails Master Planning Study was completed. This master plan included four counties around Mammoth Cave - Barren, Edmonson, Hart, and Warren - and spurred the creation of the non-profit organization Cave Country Trails, Inc., to promote the network of trail recommendations throughout the four counties.
  • In January 2025, the Barren River Area Development District (BRADD), supported by the National Park Service and all affected jurisdictions, contracted with a team of consultants to conduct a BRADD Bowling Green (BG) to Mammoth Cave National Park (MCNP) Trail Feasibility Study that will conclude at the end of December 2025.
  • The study will develop a plan for a dedicated, off-road trail and supporting trailhead facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians that enhances connectivity between Bowling Green and Mammoth Cave National Park.
  • In addition, the trail is anticipated to enhance recreational opportunities, economic development opportunities, and tourist activities for each of the jurisdictions (Warren, Edmonson and Barren Counties, Bowling Green, Plum Springs, Oakland, Smiths Grove, Rocky Hill, and Park City) that it intersects.
  • Trailheads would be constructed along the trail at several locations, including, but not limited to: Bowling Green Riverfront Park, Oakland area, Smiths Grove area, Edmonson County, and Park City. These trailheads would provide a small parking area with basic amenities, while the trail would offer a selection of historical markers along the way to highlight the history of the Cave Country Region.
